Which Plastics are UV Resistant?

When choosing the best plastic for your needs, it is important to consider environmental factors that could potentially limit the life of your plastic sheet material.

Plastics used in outdoor applications can be exposed to severe weather influences with UV radiation being one of the primary causes of plastic degradation. Plastics exposed to photo degradation will begin to crack, discolour and become more brittle losing its strength and flexibility.

However, there are a number of plastic materials available that can withstand the negative impact of ultraviolet radiation.

Polycarbonate is a durable UV resistant plastic that is tough and more tolerant of temperature extremes than acrylic.  With excellent clarity and transparency it is ideal for heavy-duty applications such as safety windows.

PETG also retains excellent clarity and impact toughness even after repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation for up to 3 years. Applications include outdoor advertising, bus shelters and incubators.

Acrylic Capped ABS sheets offer the same high specifications as other ABS sheets but with the addition of a high gloss finish and acrylic capping which provides a UV resistant surface.  The ultraviolet resistance enables the sheet to withstand the degradation that can be caused by UV light exposure.

PVC also performs exceptionally well when exposed to ultra violet rays with research showing little to no effect on PVC's tensile strength or elasticity after prolonged sun exposure.

With MOQs we can also add a UV additive to most other types of plastics. For more information on our range of UV resistant plastic sheet material, please get in touch on 01727 863138 or email sales@stephen-webster.co.uk.
